You know those magnetic letters that stick to the fridge? The ones you get little kids? We have one complete set and then other random letters from other sets but all the same style, probably like 20 extra letters.

I have them all thrown into a tubby. And I give the tubby to D.

He starts pulling out random letters.

X, I, O, S, B

And I notice that he’s sorting them but I’m not sure how just yet.

R, F, A, C, E, L

He’s totally focused and I’m still confused.

Then it hits me.

He’s pulling out the 26 letters of the alphabet in RANDOM order.

So, I wait. I wonder if he’ll actually do it-or will be double up, or forget one.

He finishes, and starts searching around the room.

“Where the U go?”

So, I help him find the U under his bed.

And then he sets them up. In order. No duplicates and none missing.

I. Am. Stunned.

Autism hits different; but I’ve yet to see him be wrong.
